December 2008 | Madison Fire Department Has Customized Why I Chose FireTM Video

A customized version of Why I Chose Fire has just become another tool for Madison Fire Department’s commitment to recruiting and retaining a qualified, diverse, inclusive and safe fire workforce. Fire Chief Debra Amesqua is featured before the video and Division Chief Art Price speaks at the video’s conclusion. Art was also Madison’s program manager for the customization process. He found it to be really easy.

“When I became part of the administrative staff—I’ve been here about a year and nine months—I wanted to produce a video just like Why I Chose Fire. I wanted to interview a number of people, have them talk about the job and what it means to them. Using these mini sound bites, I would have it as a tool when we went into schools. It’s very time consuming to put something like that together. With all the other recruitment activities, I was only getting some pieces done. Then Chief Amesqua told me to check out Why I Chose Fire. I had actually heard about it from other people. When I saw it, I said, ‘This is exactly what I want to do and it’s already done.’ It wouldn’t put our people off because the fire personnel featured weren’t from Madison. In the way the people talk about the fire service and the video shows diversity, it’s letting minorities and women know that the profession is available to everyone. For a lot of minorities and obviously women, it’s not that they can’t do the job or don’t want to do the job, it’s that they don’t know it’s a career option. The video increases awareness and says to minorities and women: Consider this family of tradition and service to the community.

Why I Chose Fire has saved me time and money. We didn’t have to produce it ourselves. We were able to get our identity into the process and the customization process was really easy.  I like that aspect because I have a lot going on right now.

“Here at Madison we want to get ahead of the curve in terms of where the population is changing. We’re looking for good people and people who also represent our community. We now have another tool to back up our goal.”
