Trailblazer for Inclusion and Diversity
|
| |
 |
In July, I visited Toni and his wife Elaine. In preparation for that visit, I wrote a poem—its title is ‘Hero’—to express how much Toni’s wise counsel, sincerity, and taking a stand on inclusion and diversity have meant to me.
Toni lived a wonderful life—full of accomplishment, friendship and love. I’m sharing the poem hoping that as you read it, your voices will come together to acknowledge Toni and send his family comfort and peace.

Hero

You are a courageous man.
Not for the dragons you slay.
But you dare to stand
and challenge the fears
That cry out to keep us the same

Diversity in Motion: A Fire Service Experience
By Dan Haden, Recruitment and Community Outreach Officer Toronto Fire Services
We’ve been discussing public accountability at major fire service conferences for at least the amount of time that I have also been at these conferences—about 20 years. Most of those discussions centered the scope of accountability around the intuition and experiences of respected fire service leaders, and rightly so. Those leaders were generally from the largest departments, with the broadest experiences dealing with the most diverse communities on the most sensitive issues under the most limiting of circumstances.
I Want To Be A Firefighter!
...and what Toronto Fire Services is doing to help prospective women candidates
Three times in Lyndsey Bamlett’s life she has declared her dream. Turning the dream into reality began two years ago when she started taking courses and working toward the required qualifications—truck driving, CPR, acrophobia, medical, clinical, swift-water rescue, to name a few. “I took the courses and got the certificates to demonstrate my commitment,” says Lyndsey. “I also attended information sessions—at least 15 to 20 over the course of a year—given by recruiters for the Toronto Fire Services (TFS). Eventually, the recruiters were asking, “Who is this keener?” |
