FIRE 20/20 Celebrates Women’s History
Month
Back in the early eighties when the National Women’s History Project began, contributions of women were rarely documented and "were
usually written in as mere footnotes. Women of color and women in fields
such as math, science, and art were completely omitted. It often seems that
the history of women is written in invisible ink.
"Today, when you search the Internet with the words ‘women's + history + month,’ you’ll find more than 40,500,000 citations." [source]
With this newsletter issue, FIRE 20/20 hopes to add some acknowledgement to women firefighters for their competence, courage, caring, compassion, and commitment. They're improving the fire service every day! |

Ladder of Inference
A new kind of “ladder” for the fire service to use.
Slaying the Strength Stereotype
"In the first week of the academy, I can easily read the thought bubbles
over the heads of some of the men when they're looking at their women classmates.
'I wonder if she can do the job. I bet she can't do the same job I can do.'
No one leaves our academy with this line of thinking." Division Chief
- Ronald Schwenn, Training Manager, Madison Fire Department
How Women Have Improved the Fire Service
“For departments that have not embraced the added value that is brought
to your station, company and department by women firefighters, you are missing
out!” Captain Roy Paige, Los Angeles Fire Department
